Jones Robb PLLC celebrates the recognition of members Liz Burke and Susie Jones as IP STARS 2023 Patent Stars. It is not surprising to the Jones Robb team that Liz and Susie, who each have patent careers spanning the last three decades, have been designated as Patent Stars. With a breadth of knowledge based on experiences at a global law firm and as patent examiners at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), they bring a deep, institutional understanding of the patent field to their work for clients. In addition, Liz and Susie have experience in patent litigation in district court and patent appeals at the Federal Circuit, which further informs their approach to their current patent prosecution and counseling practices.
Liz maintains a robust patent prosecution practice, having prosecuted thousands of utility and design patent applications around the world and argued before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Her experiences in patent prosecution and litigation are the foundation on which her current practice stands, focusing on client counseling, due diligence and opinion work, competitor monitor and strategic portfolio development, and post-grant practice before the PTAB. Liz’s degrees in biomedical engineering and bioengineering allow her to easily learn new technologies in the medical and biotech spaces, a plus for the startup clients she counsels. Her technical experience also extends to the automotive, imaging, packaging, and oil drilling industries, among others. As a member of Jones Robb, Liz manages the firm’s intern program, which focuses on introducing high school and undergraduate students to STEM career opportunities outside of the laboratory.
Susie, a founding member of the firm and the firm’s managing member, focuses her practice on strategic global portfolio development with an emphasis on competitive markets, as well as client counseling on freedom to operate and due diligence investigations. She supports clients in various highly competitive industries, including point-of-care diagnostic platforms, medical devices, and, robotic surgery. In addition, Susie also supports clients in various emerging technologies, such as alternative energy and bioinformatics. In her management role at Jones Robb, Susie focuses much of her energy on process development and quality assurance to ensure customer satisfaction in the legal services delivered to the firms’ clients.
